:: longing for spring ::

I have blogged about the lovely shop the wheatfield on Etsy before.  Seriously though....when are the birds going to start chirping here in Calgary?? It feels like winter is never going to end this year! I can't wait to step out of the house in the morning to a dewy, fresh spring morning and hear the birds chirping. Are you longing for spring too?

:: things i love friday ::

- a cold, blustery weekend spent with my little family
- seeing H run on the ice towards the hockey players. Can't wait to get him on skates!
- a quiet Sunday spent cooking, baking and freezing things for the week ahead
- a hot latte to celebrate that Friday is finally here!

I enjoyed my week off blogging. I really needed some time to relax and get some work done - both around my house, and schoolwork. Our house was hit by the man cold too, so I had lots of time to make tea and say "Poor little bunny" to my whimpery husband. It's now a mom cold, but somehow not as serious for moi.

My report cards are coming along and I have a few crafty projects on the go that I will share in some later posts.

I may not have been blogging, but I could never abandon my Google Reader for a whole week. Here are some posts that inspired me this week:

- CoolMomPicks editor Liz has a blog? How did I not know this? Loving Mom 101....and she just celebrated 5 years blogging. Wow. So many great posts to read over there, it's going to take me forever to catch up. This one really sums up how I am feeling right now being back at work - Grass. Greener.

- this awesome art table spotted on Ohdeedoh. Wonder if I could DIY something similar?

- loved the book The Happiness Project and I love reading her blog. Discovered a great gardening blog via this inspiring interview too.

:: a little blog break ::

I think it's time for me to take a mini break from blogging. Not only is it report card time at school (I'm a teacher, btw) but I think it's time for me to take a little breather from the beautiful, inspiring, but sometimes overwhelming world of blogs, twitter and pinterest. Do you ever feel this way?

Not forever though! I'll be back next week sometime. I'm planning a weekend of relaxation, enjoying my family and hopefully working on some crafty projects....and report cards!

:: sponsor spotlight - knotted nest ::

There are some shops on Etsy where you can just tell that the person behind them is a true creative soul. A lovely someone who just loves to make beautiful things for you to enjoy.

Kristen of Knotted Nest is one of those people. Her whimsical buntings, made of upcycled vintage fabrics caught my eye a long time ago. Since then, many of them have found places to bring cheer all around my house.

She is offering Mon Petit Amour readers 20% off the entire shop for the month of February. Browse the gorgeous bunting banners, wallets and passport covers here. Use code AMOUR11 at the checkout.

:: dream dollhouse ::

How incredible is this dollhouse transformation? I found it via Ohdeedoh, from the blog Kiki Creates. I love the wallpaper in the rooms. It's hard to tell from the pictures but it is 6 feet tall!

I'm also in love with this ruffly duvet cover she made and her lovely etsy shop! Isn't this print from her shop so cheery?

:: ask a naturopath ::

Q: How do I stop getting constipated or having trapped gas that causes incredible pain?  I take a probiotic pill to reset my system, but would like to solve the problem altogether.

A: Since we have been addressing questions relating to children in these past few weeks I figured it was time to answer a mommy question!

I deal with a LOT of digestive disorders in my practice.  Digestion plays such a large part in achieving optimal health. I am glad that this question came up.  There are a few key components to efficient and effective digestion that I would like to go over.  First of all, we want to make sure that we are breaking down our food effectively.  If this is not happening, it can lead to a number of symptoms such as headaches, skin conditions, joint pain, gas and bloating, diarrhea and constipation (this may be a result of leaky gut syndrome, which is a topic for another entry).  If the food has been broken down, we are then concerned about nutrient absorption, which occurs primarily in the small intestine.  If we are not absorbing these nutrients we may experience deficiency symptoms.  Lastly, we want to ensure that we are eliminating appropriately.

Ideally, we should be having a bowel movement every time we eat.  Realistically, this is not the case, however it is important to be having at least one bowel movement a day.  Constipation can lead not only to discomfort, gas and bloating but you are also reabsorbing toxins the longer the fecal matter is sitting in your bowels.

So what do you do about it?  In my practice, I am a firm believer that dietary modification is one of the most important and effective tools I use.  It is possible that you are not ingesting enough fiber in your diet, which is extremely important in regulating bowel movements.  Try to increase fiber with fruit and vegetables, one 1Tbsp of ground flax seed/day and lots of water.  If you are dehydrated, you are more likely to experience constipation.  Another common cause for gas, bloating and constipation is having sensitivities to certain food groups.  The most common culprits tend to be dairy and gluten.  Try removing these from your diet for a couple of weeks and see how you feel, then reintroduce them to determine the effect on your digestive system.

Probiotics can be very effective for constipation but I do not like patients to become reliant on them.  As a naturopathic doctor, my goal is to try and find the root cause of the problem and often popping a probiotic is just for symptom relief.  If you feel like you have tried everything and nothing seems to help for very long, a liver detox would be a great option for you.  This can be done in a number of ways so make sure to check with your naturopathic doctor to determine the best treatment protocol for you.
