I enjoyed my week off blogging. I really needed some time to relax and get some work done - both around my house, and schoolwork. Our house was hit by the man cold too, so I had lots of time to make tea and say "Poor little bunny" to my whimpery husband. It's now a mom cold, but somehow not as serious for moi.
My report cards are coming along and I have a few crafty projects on the go that I will share in some later posts.
I may not have been blogging, but I could never abandon my Google Reader for a whole week. Here are some posts that inspired me this week:

I think it's time for me to take a mini break from blogging. Not only is it report card time at school (I'm a teacher, btw) but I think it's time for me to take a little breather from the beautiful, inspiring, but sometimes overwhelming world of blogs, twitter and pinterest. Do you ever feel this way?
Not forever though! I'll be back next week sometime. I'm planning a weekend of relaxation, enjoying my family and hopefully working on some crafty projects....and report cards!

Q: How do I stop getting constipated or having trapped gas that causes incredible pain? I take a probiotic pill to reset my system, but would like to solve the problem altogether.
A: Since we have been addressing questions relating to children in these past few weeks I figured it was time to answer a mommy question!
I deal with a LOT of digestive disorders in my practice. Digestion plays such a large part in achieving optimal health. I am glad that this question came up. There are a few key components to efficient and effective digestion that I would like to go over. First of all, we want to make sure that we are breaking down our food effectively. If this is not happening, it can lead to a number of symptoms such as headaches, skin conditions, joint pain, gas and bloating, diarrhea and constipation (this may be a result of leaky gut syndrome, which is a topic for another entry). If the food has been broken down, we are then concerned about nutrient absorption, which occurs primarily in the small intestine. If we are not absorbing these nutrients we may experience deficiency symptoms. Lastly, we want to ensure that we are eliminating appropriately.
Ideally, we should be having a bowel movement every time we eat. Realistically, this is not the case, however it is important to be having at least one bowel movement a day. Constipation can lead not only to discomfort, gas and bloating but you are also reabsorbing toxins the longer the fecal matter is sitting in your bowels.
So what do you do about it? In my practice, I am a firm believer that dietary modification is one of the most important and effective tools I use. It is possible that you are not ingesting enough fiber in your diet, which is extremely important in regulating bowel movements. Try to increase fiber with fruit and vegetables, one 1Tbsp of ground flax seed/day and lots of water. If you are dehydrated, you are more likely to experience constipation. Another common cause for gas, bloating and constipation is having sensitivities to certain food groups. The most common culprits tend to be dairy and gluten. Try removing these from your diet for a couple of weeks and see how you feel, then reintroduce them to determine the effect on your digestive system.
Probiotics can be very effective for constipation but I do not like patients to become reliant on them. As a naturopathic doctor, my goal is to try and find the root cause of the problem and often popping a probiotic is just for symptom relief. If you feel like you have tried everything and nothing seems to help for very long, a liver detox would be a great option for you. This can be done in a number of ways so make sure to check with your naturopathic doctor to determine the best treatment protocol for you.
